Some four years ago I became ill...

From the February 1920 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Some four years ago I became ill and unhappy, and as I was not getting much relief from materia medica, a friend recommended Christian Science, and I decided to give it a trial. Before going to the practitioner I went into the Christian Science reading room, and picking up the little book, "Rudimental DivineScience" by Mrs. Eddy, I read on page 2: "Healing physical sickness is the smallest part of Christian Science... The emphatic purpose of Christian Science is the healing of sin." These few lines were a great revelation to me. I sought a practitioner and had treatment and on awaking next morning found myself healed. I never shall forget my astonishment, and I felt awed, knowing that it was God who had healed me, as it were "in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye." I went about rejoicing and giving thanks for the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Immediately I obtained "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and the Quarterly, and began to study. I read the textbook right through from beginning to end and find it very helpful to keep doing so. I became so interested that I forgot all else, and in a week many old things had passed away and many had become new.

I have had many demonstrations of the power of God to heal and to help, and have much to be thankful for. At the time of the influenza epidemic I became quite ill in the night; however, I told no one, but began to declare the truth to the best of my understanding. In a half hour I was free. The presence of divine Love was so clearly realized that the uplift was felt for some days. I realize more and more that complete health, holiness, and harmony are obtained only by right activity of thought, and all that man needs to be conscious of is God, infinite and eternal, and His idea.

I thank the Father-Mother God every day for Christian Science and for the unselfed love of our revered Leader, Mrs. Eddy, who suffered so much that we might know the truth and that we might know what it is to reflect Truth, Life, and Love, as our dear Savior reflected it. I do not see how I could get along without our literature. It is meat and drink to me.—
