The Bible was practically a closed book to me because I could not understand or enjoy reading it, although I did so from a sense of duty. When Christian Science was presented to me, I felt it was just exactly what I had thought religion ought to be and hoped it was all true, although I was rather skeptical regarding the healing because I had neither seen nor heard of any remarkable cure. I was also very antagonistic toward Mrs. Eddy and could not tell why. Looking back I see now that this was simply the world's hatred of Truth and of its revelator to this age. I thought after first reading "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" that it would take the place of the Bible, and was quite happy to put the Bible aside. As I went on reading, however, I saw that Christian Science was gradually turning me back to the Bible, and I soon discovered that the two books were inseparable. When I again took up the Bible it was with the greatest joy and satisfaction that I realized that Science and Health had opened my understanding so that I could grasp hidden treasures of the Scriptures.
For those who are passing through the severe trial of the loss of a loved one, I hope my experience may prove helpful. I was alone in a strange city with a six-months-old baby when my husband passed on, and I had to travel four days and nights to reach my home. My understanding of Christian Science seemed very, very small, just enough to know that the old churches could not give me anything because they taught that death is in accord with God's will, which was anything but comforting to me; so it was a case of having to hold to Christian Science as the only hope. The uplift that I received from Christian Science and the loving help extended to me, proved that Christian Science is indeed the truth and that God is "a very present help in trouble." The way my needs were met financially at that time was really remarkable and has served ever since as a reminder of God's goodness; and whenever the temptation has come to entertain fear regarding the future, the thought of that experience has always helped me.
Many ills have been overcome, such as whooping cough, croup, ptomaine poisoning, and an abnormal condition manifested by my son was destroyed and the organ restored to a perfectly normal condition. This latter was a case where a surgical operation would have been necessary had Christian Science not been recognized as able to meet every need. Is it any wonder, then, that I desire to express, through our periodicals, my gratitude to Mrs. Eddy for the truth she has given to the world, also my heartfelt thanks to the practitioners and teacher who have so kindly helped me to understand God better. — Chatham, Ontario, Canada.
