THE "GENTLE PRESENCE"

From the April 1922 issue of The Christian Science Journal

There is great need to-day for the spirit of gentleness among men. There is always this need; but it seems as if the world, which had become so accustomed to the warfare of the years so recently gone by, still retained its attitude of aggressive mental strife. It is defiant. It continues to strike its mental blows. As a result, a large number of men and women remain unhappy and diseased. Thus it will continue to be until the mental attitude of the world changes radically.

What is wrong? There must be a fundamental error somewhere. Every effect has an antecedent cause. A mistake in an arithmetical problem always results from an erroneous application of the rule or rules necessary for its solution. An inharmonious mental condition, whatever its nature, arises in a similar manner; it is the inevitable result of erroneous thinking. What, then, is the source of inharmony? Christian Science answers the question. Christian Science exposes with unerring exactitude all the false beliefs of the human mind, and shows that every one of them originates in the fallacy that matter is real, or that the material senses can cognize or recognize a single idea of spiritual reality or spiritual truth. Analyze any or all of the inharmonies of human existence, trace them to their origin, and it will be found that every one of them is the offspring of false material sense.

A mistake can be rectified by the honest application of the truth. The inharmony of the world can be destroyed, its unhappiness cleared away, its disease and sin healed,— all of these can be accomplished. How? By the destruction of false material sense. In what manner? By the obtaining of a spiritual understanding of God, the divine Principle of being. It is this divine Principle which Christian Science is explaining to mankind through the works of the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy. And through the understanding of divine Principle and spiritual creation, through the knowledge of Principle's spiritual law and its universal activity, the illusions of corporeal sense must ultimately be completely overcome. Then, and then only, will harmony reign supreme.
