THE SUNDAY SCHOOL

From the April 1922 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In Christian Science Sunday Schools we are working out problems in education ahead of the world. We are learning that we can work out these problems only as we look away from personal ability or disability, and know instead that divine Love superintends; that God, divine Mind, is the one and only teacher; and that children, as stated in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy (p. 582), are "the spiritual thoughts and representatives of Life, Truth, and Love."

The Christian Science Sunday School is the only school in the world where children are taught the unreality of evil. Amidst the theories and systems of education, amidst the doctrines of men, amidst all the turmoil of our day, the Christian Science Sunday School stands unique; and the children are, indeed, blessed who come under its protecting love and care. Jesus was the greatest teacher the world has ever known; and yet he said, "I can of mine own self do nothing." When his disciples were arguing and disputing about place and power, he did not try to meet argument with argument. He did not try with human reason or theory to teach them. He called a little child, and, placing him in the midst of them, spoke those words which the world of materiality is yet far from understanding: "Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven." This was surely an appeal to the child-qualities of faith and trust, of purity and simplicity, that the Master recognized in each disciple; and with what gentleness and beauty was the lesson taught. It is this quality of humility and teachableness which best fits one for service in the Sunday school of a Christian Science church.

For our guidance in this work we have in our Manual (Art. XX, Sect. 1,2, and 3) some very simple yet profound rules. The better these rules are understood and obeyed, the better the teaching and healing will be in our Sunday school. Our Leader's great demonstration of truth was preceded by a wonderful vision or understanding; and those of us who have not as yet reached the height of her demonstration must be ready to admit that we have not yet attained her vision. Christian Scientists, therefore, turn again and again to their Leader's writings, and to their Manual, that they may gain a clearer understanding of what she intended her church to be and to do.
