OF all the many longings of the human heart there is, perhaps, none more pronounced than humanity's craving for peace. This has been especially noticeable during recent years. Not by any means do all view the matter in the same light; but in some form or in some way each one is endeavoring to find the comfort and happiness of peace.
The dictionary defines peace as "a state of quiet or tranquillity; freedom from disturbance or agitation." All through the ages we have the record of men individually and collectively seeking for this peace. But has it as yet been attained, or has the pathway to its attainment been discerned? And yet we read in the Bible,—and all Bible students are familiar with the words,—"Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace." Multitudes have tried to prove the truth of that statement; but how often have they been successful? And if not, what has been the reason for their frequent failure? The very fact that peace, real peace, has not as yet been attained by the human race, would clearly indicate that acquaintance with God has not been sufficiently cultivated. This could not have been for lack of desire, for every thinking person certainly desires to know God. Has it not, rather, been due to the inability of humanity to find God,—that is, an intelligent, right concept of God?
It is plain that to have even a measure of peace one needs to have some idea of what God is; and this means to be able correctly to interpret that which is known about God. It is here that Christian Science comes to the help of the poor suffering human race, giving a right starting point; and the proof that Christian Science is correct in its interpretation of what God is, is given in the good results obtained by working from this new viewpoint. While Christian Science does heal the sick and straighten out human discord, yet that is but the smallest part, and only a beginning, of what it is to accomplish. Its possibilities are limitless; and the ultimate, the complete waking up of mankind to the great fact that immortality is possible now, that man is at-one with God, perfect as God is perfect, since man—the real man—is the likeness of his Maker.
