Eight years ago I was led to accept Christian Science through the instantaneous healing of my boy, who was considered a delicate child. We were living in South America at the time, where my son attended a school belonging to two Christian Scientists. When I told them I thought it advisable to keep him from school on account of illness, I was told it was quite unnecessary, and that if I would send him to school they would help him to get well. I did not hesitate one moment, as something told me Christian Science would heal; and it did in this case. I soon asked for "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy; and when I got to the chapter called "Footsteps of Truth," I knew I had found the Savior, the Christ, Truth, knowledge of whom dissolves the mists of materialism, and reveals the real man, made in God's own likeness. I shall never forget the first Christian Science service I attended: I felt as if I had reached heaven, it all seemed so wonderful.
Before taking up the study of Christian Science I was laboring under a sense of separation, and felt I could never be happy till I got back to my home country. As the truth began to dawn on me, however, I saw that happiness is everywhere present to the spiritualized consciousness. On account of the war, the time came for us to return home. The knowledge of divine protection prevented us sailing on the Lusitania, although we had practically been booked for that ship. We left New York by the next boat. The Bible and Science and Health were my constant companions on the journey. As we reached the danger zone I felt I had lost all sense of fear. When the last night of our voyage arrived, which was believed to be the most dangerous, I went to bed with my two children, realizing that God is indeed the "all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal" (Science and Health, p. 587). In the early morning my husband came in to say that we had passed the danger zone and were safe. Words fail to express my gratitude for the comfort and strength I received from Science and Health while passing through this trying experience. While my husband was serving in the mine-sweeping service during the war, Christian Science again provided me with spiritual thoughts of comfort and protection. I am happy to say he passed through many dangerous experiences unharmed.
Christian Science is teaching me that only as I am willing to turn away from all material sense testimony, and rely on divine Principle, can I demonstrate the allness of good and the nothingness of evil. I am realizing the truth of what Mrs. Eddy says: "Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts" (Science and Health, p. 261). I am truly grateful to Jesus the Christ, the Way-shower; to Mrs. Eddy, for Christian Science; and also for class instruction.— Greenock, Scotland.
