Testimonies of Healing

Almost ten years ago I was led to...

From the August 1925 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Almost ten years ago I was led to Christian Science in a time of great need. I was suffering from a nervous breakdown, accompanied by all its attendant ills, together with an organic disorder. The doctors said I could be helped only through an operation. This I could not undergo because of extreme weakness. Discouragement and despair seemed to overwhelm me. I stood, as it were, with the Red Sea in front of me and the wilderness behind. In my great desire for guidance I held to this verse from the Scriptures: "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly,"—a prayer that I now realize led me to the truth.

One Sunday a friend called and lovingly mentioned Christian Science. I was hungering for the truth, and wanted something more than human opinion about my condition. She did not enter into any discussion or explanation, but simply spoke of her healing when all other means had failed. I was much impressed, for I knew that her condition had been very serious. At the same time one of my sisters living in a distant city became interested in Christian Science. The friend proposed that I go to a practitioner, and I arranged to do so. After my visit to the practitioner I was greatly comforted, for I realized then that the truth, as understood in Christian Science, is the only way of salvation. I was sustained, but did not get the healing. My progress seemed slow. I sought help from two other practitioners; but still the desired healing was not manifested. I knew, however, that the truth could heal me as it had others. I was discouraged; but having nothing else to turn to I clung to the little I knew of Truth.

Then I attended a Christian Science Wednesday evening testimony meeting, and as I listened to the testimonies my thought was illumined. The message conveyed by one of the speakers was especially helpful, and upon learning that she was a practitioner I arranged an appointment. It seems to me that I was healed by the first treatment. Fear was overcome and destroyed, and the disease has never returned. The practitioner turned me to the Bible, to "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" and the other writings of Mary Baker Eddy, and to the Lesson-Sermons. I had never before been impressed with the value of the daily study of the lesson, and formerly had read only one section a day. She also encouraged me to use the Concordances to Mrs. Eddy's writings in my study of Christian Science. To-day I am still a student of Christian Science. The lessons unfold to me more and more of the truth. My mother has been so impressed with my healing and all the good I have received, that she has turned to Christian Science for help and reads the Lesson-Sermon every day; and others in the family have turned to it for help also.
