GOVERNMENT

From the August 1925 issue of The Christian Science Journal

At a time such as the present, when added interest in the American Constitution is being urged and thought is drawn to the contemplation of humanity's needs and the solution of its problems, in religious bodies and in the body politic, it were well to consider prayerfully the way out of the wilderness of varying human thoughts and conflicting opinions into the kingdom of heaven on earth, where law and gospel coincide. There is one road which leads to a practical understanding of human affairs and to the solution of every problem. It is the way of the Christ, Truth. To tread it is to prove the power of divine Love in the government of man and the universe,— to demonstrate that "where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty."

Christian Scientists, who are always loyal citizens, recognize the truth contained in Paul's statement. They further perceive that each good gift must extend to all, if mankind is to be free—and who is there who does not desire universal salvation? —and they are ever grateful that the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, has brought to the world this Science of the Christ, wherein man's divine rights are universally proclaimed and proved demonstrable. To the citizens of the whole earth Mrs. Eddy has revealed the eternal truth of being and man's relation to God, to his fellow-man, and to the government of divine Principle, the one Mind.

Why does Christian Science offer to all this great privilege, carrying, as it must, its corresponding duty of obedience to the laws of the land? This question is best answered in Mrs. Eddy's own definition of Christian Science, in "Rudimental Divine Science" (p. 1), as "the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony." Knowledge of this law, love for it in the minds and hearts of all men, women, and children, will redeem humanity from the slavery of evil thought, rule, or practice. In stating the practicability of this Science to meet the needs of the hour, on page 128 of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," under the marginal heading, "Practical Science," Mrs. Eddy unfolds the great benefit which attends the understanding and demonstration of God's law. In conformity with Scriptural admonition this Science of Christianity commands, "Turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest."
