OUR IDENTIFICATION WITH REALITY

From the June 1926 issue of The Christian Science Journal

EVERY human need, every prayer, every problem, every human cry for peace and rest may be answered by the truth about God and man. The real man now possesses all the good humanity craves, as Christian Science shows; and so it is wise to ascertain what is already within the possession of God's man.

It would seem the natural thing, when pain or evil comes, to try to crowd it out by bringing in something merely pleasant. This, however, is not the practice of Christian Science, which in its healing work destroys error by revealing the underlying, overlying truth. Christian Science, strictly speaking, does not make discordant mortals into healthy ones, even if it may so appear; nor, going farther, does it make mortals into the image and likeness of God. Really, Christian Science heals by awakening us to what we are and what we always shall be as the children of God. A mortal may say that he has been healed of some disease, and from the human standpoint this is so; but the Christian Scientist is cognizant of the fact that the so-called disease has been proved unreal because of the understanding of God's allness and the present perfection of spiritual man. The real man never suffers from disease, for spirituality cannot be affected by any so-called material condition. In every case of Christian Science healing, some of mortality is put off, revealing some degree of man's perfection.

On page 242 of "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" Mrs. Eddy writes: "You can never demonstrate spirituality until you declare yourself to be immortal and understand that you are so. Christian Science is absolute; it is neither behind the point of perfection nor advancing towards it; it is at this point and must be practised therefrom. Unless you fully perceive that you are the child of God, hence perfect, you have no Principle to demonstrate and no rule for its demonstration."
