Ten years ago I began earnestly to investigate the teachings of Christian Science. While at that time this doctrine seemed to me too transcendental for practical application, I finally decided, after much tender persuasion by some ladies who shared my home, to find out whether or not it was the wonderful revelation its adherents claimed it to be; for they had told me that this proof was available to all.
I soon found that this Science was all—and more—than they claimed. I found it true, thank God; and I can never cease to be grateful to the dear women who urged me to prove it. The Bible, which I had sadly laid aside, feeling that although I fully accepted it as God's Word, I could not seem to grasp its meaning, now became my daily companion and counsel; for these dear friends had told me that their textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, explained the Bible, and that the two should be studied together. This renewed interest in the Bible is sufficient cause for eternal gratitude; but the understanding of God and of man's relationship to Him, which followed the study of these two books, soon brought complete healing of insomnia, weak eyes, chronic and disagreeable catarrh, lifelong constipation, and tonsillitis. Burns were also quickly healed. One ailment—a most trying one (eczema) —was healed by a practitioner's help; but the others followed the enlightenment which resulted from my own study.
Only quite recently a healing came that to me is such high, convincing, and renewed proof of God's ever-presence, goodness, willingness, and ability to help us in time of need, that I feel it must be told; and I pray that this testimony may help some seeker after Truth to prove that God is Life, as the Scriptures teach. This experience proved to me that when the Psalmist wrote of the Lord "who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases," he certainly knew whereof he spoke. It also proved to me that when Mrs. Eddy declared (Science and Health, p. 402), "Christian Science is always the most skilful surgeon," she knew whereof she wrote. When a passing automobile struck me on the side and flung me violently backward to the hard street, the side, spine, and head were so severely injured that it seemed my last earthly hour had come. But God, the Life of man, as ever, was a present help and savior; and clearly piercing the woe and darkness there came the memory of this Bible teaching. There came, too, the memory of our Leader's loving thought for humanity and of her last written words, "God is my Life" (The Life of Mary Baker Eddy, by Sibyl Wilbur, p. 383). These blessed reminders so roused me that when at our door loving arms met me, carried me into the house, and placed me on a bed, I was fully conscious and able to give the name and telephone number of a Christian Science practitioner, who immediately began work for me and lovingly continued until I was healed.
