As I return in thought to the time when I believed that I had nothing to live for, my heart overflows with love and gratitude to God, "the all-hearing and all-knowing Mind, to whom each need of man is always known and by whom it will be supplied" (Science and Health, p. 7), and to our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, for Christian Science.
After the most unhappy night that I had ever experienced, I was awakened in the morning to hear the words, "Love God," and I became conscious of a beautiful sense of light and love; and as I was pondering over what "Love God" could mean, I heard, "Help your sister." From that moment the sadness left me—destroyed. The same evening, while out walking with this sister, who to mortal sense was indeed in the bondage of fear and suffering, depending on drugs, which gave her less and less relief, I said to her, "I have just got to help you; I don't know how yet;" and she answered, "I feel that I shall be cured." On reaching home Christian Science was presented to the family as a possible means of healing the difficulty.
I never doubted for a moment that this was the way in which to help my sister; and so I immediately began to study with her the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. At once every drug was discarded, and regardless of opposition and antagonism divine Love led us on. I was then only studying Christian Science for my sister's sake; but to my great joy one day I discovered that I was healed of two disorders. One of these was selfishness, for I had been very selfish. I found that now I was living for others, and almost hourly praying that God would purify me that I might glorify Him to them. The other healing was that of constipation, which had given me a great deal of pain and discomfort. I rejoiced in the great power of Truth; for if my slight understanding of God had done this for me, it certainly could heal my sister.
