Christian Science was first presented to me nearly twenty-three years ago by a dear friend as a source of comfort in a great sorrow. Through the reading of some Sentinels, which I eagerly devoured, my thought was so helped that I desired to read the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.
My physical condition was very low, as I had a complication of troubles, and though I was faithfully treated by the doctor, I was growing more inharmonious all the time. A lung trouble with a cough of long standing was considered tubercular by the doctors and my friends. The cough medicines I had been taking seemed to make matters worse, so I ceased to use them. In reading the Christian Science textbook my thought was not of physical healing, but to learn more of the will of God. The Sentinels had shown me that the will of God is sweet and good and life-giving. In fact, any other teaching had become incongruous to me, and when I was told by well-meaning friends not to grieve, because it was the will of God to afflict me, I did not answer them, but my thought said, No, there is some great mistake in this. Those who have read the works of Mrs. Eddy know how the mistaken thought that God sends evil is rectified, and they will rejoice that the truth is being established for the scientific overcoming of evil.
I read from the textbook all the time I could give, and it seemed to answer all my questions about God and His creation. It came to me one day that I was not coughing and had not been doing so for some time. This was a surprise, for I had not given it a thought. As my lungs felt so clear and free I measured my chest and found it had expanded two inches in the short time I had been reading; and from that day to this I have never had a bit of trouble with my lungs.
