When we decided to investigate Christian Science, in August, 1914, we first attended a Wednesday evening testimony meeting and enjoyed it; then we attended the following Sunday morning service and enjoyed that. The following Tuesday I went to the Christian Science Reading Room, bought a Christian Science Quarterly, borrowed a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and then went out to a second-hand store and bought a Bible with large, clear print, for fifteen cents. We were passing through a period of extreme limitation at that time. I took the books home and began to pick out the lesson of the previous Sunday from what I could remember hearing read at the church, and according to the note to students. We did not know a Christian Scientist in the city, so had no one to go to for assistance or advice. I had to dig it out of the books.
Twelve days after getting those books I experienced my first demonstration, the instantaneous healing of a very severe bruise on my wrist, which had made my arm numb and limp. It was the first time in all my life I had looked to God for help, and it came so instantly that I forgot all about the incident, till about six hours later, when I was told I had better wash the dirt off my wrist. I looked, and was amazed to see a bruise all yellow and green and blue, the size of the door knob I had struck it on; but there was not the slightest soreness.
About three weeks later I experienced a second instantaneous healing. In opening the window at night one of my fingers was caught between the upper and the lower sections. I sat down and tried to remember what I had read in Science and Health. After a few moments I was asked, "Does your finger hurt still?" I had to feel it to find out, for I had been "absent from the body" those few moments. Next morning I was told, "Well, you will lose that nail;" but I did not.
