SOMETIMES one who is striving to live as a Christian Scientist should, accords loving assent to a proposition of the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, even though it is still necessary for him to study and pray to understand the scientific reason of its requirements. That which is Christian must also be scientific; and the endeavor to practice a Christian injunction will lead ultimately to the revelation of the reason for it.
The Bible presents many figures of spiritual concepts, figures intended to convey those spiritual precepts which unfold and develop the spiritual sense of man's true origin and existence. As mere words, these precepts are powerless to advance humanity; but because they have their origin in and are inspired by glimpses of spiritual Truth revealed to the writers of Scripture, the words convey spiritual impressions, and so quicken thought to search after and to find the same revelation of spiritual Truth which inspired the original utterance. When this realization is gained, the demonstration of the spiritual idea in human environment becomes spontaneous.
To one who seems but scantily supplied with the warmth of human affection, and who perhaps is not finding it easy to give expression even to his dim sense of this necessary quality, the demand of the Bible and of Christian Science, that one should love his neighbor as himself, may present a puzzling problem, whose solution may seem long delayed. Yet the solution is to be had; and it will come as the reward of the fullest obedience which it may be possible to demonstrate under the circumstances. The Bible and our Leader's works reveal the antidote for every phase of error which seems to darken human thought or keep it under the shadow of false beliefs. Hence, no one need despair of having the gloom finally dispelled.
