In January, 1915, our small son...

From the March 1930 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In January, 1915, our small son was taken ill with tonsillitis and earache, and was in such pain that I was up with him for ten days and nights. Soon after this the gathering in his ears broke, and he was left so deaf he could only hear loud shouting. We had a doctor, but he was unable to do anything to relieve the child. I then told my husband that I was going to try Christian Science. I went to a faithful student and asked her for help, and also for some literature. She lent me "Unity of Good" by Mary Baker Eddy, and began treatment. In three or four days the child's hearing was normal, and he has never had a return either of tonsillitis or earache. I was ready and anxious to learn more of Christian Science, and felt that if all the good one heard and read about was in it, I wanted it; and if others could understand it I also could get something out of it. My years of study have proved that the half of all the good in Christian Science can never be told.

Our two children had many of the so-called contagious diseases, but except for a half day with measles they were not confined to bed, because the truth was realized for them in Christian Science. In the winter of 1918 our daughter had influenza and I was doing the metaphysical work for her myself. We had been awake most of the night repeating some of the psalms, praying, repeating "the scientific statement of being" from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy (p. 468), and declaring the truth as taught in Christian Science. Dropping asleep for a few moments I was awakened by an alarming sound, but being free from all fear I opened Science and Health at page 475 and began reading the answer to "What is man?" Before I had finished the child was sleeping peacefully. She arose the next morning well, except for a slight hoarseness, which disappeared in two days with the help of a practitioner. In 1919 this same child contracted diphtheria, and was healed in a week with the help of a practitioner.

In December, 1921, I was obliged to make the trip from Butte, Montana, to Cooke City, through the Yellowstone National Park. Owing to deep snow this trip was made in an open sled drawn by horses. The second day out there came up a blizzard which blew toward us, and it soon seemed as if my face would freeze. I began going over mentally hymn 81 from the Christian Science Hymnal and realizing as clearly as possible its meaning. Then I went over the Lord's Prayer and its spiritual interpretation (Science and Health, pp. 16, 17). By that time I was comfortably warm. After nine hours in the open I felt no ill effects and was not chilled. I have been healed of chronic colds, sore throat, nervous prostration, and other ills, and have been helped financially many times and also protected from accidents, for which I am very grateful. But these seem small in comparison to the spiritual uplifting and peace of mind which come of a better understanding of God gained through this study.—
