"BLESSED ARE THE MEEK"

From the August 1930 issue of The Christian Science Journal

IN that most wonderful of sermons, the Sermon on the Mount, we read these simple words of Christ Jesus: "Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth." With how little understanding have men sometimes read these words! A so-called meek person has commonly been regarded as possessing few, if any, of the qualities of manliness.

The importance of meekness as an element of character was not something that appeared first to Jesus. In the Old Testament meekness is spoken of with approval; and Jesus' statement in the Beatitudes paraphrases the eleventh verse of the thirty-seventh psalm, which reads, "But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace."

It is interesting to note that Moses is described in the Bible as meek. In the twelfth chapter of Numbers it is said, "Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth." Is it possible from the study of Moses' career to ascertain the basis of his meekness?
