THE Adam-dream has long been believed by mortals. The story of its beginning is briefly set forth in these words of the seventh verse of the second chapter of Genesis: "The Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul." Having created a material body and imparted life to it, God is supposed to have made man. How persistent has been this erroneous concept of creation! Generation after generation, men have accepted it; and it is acquiesced in even to this day. Thus, the belief is still very generally held that man consists of a material body, with a soul or intelligence; and that, consequently, he may be regarded as partly material and partly spiritual.
It has to be noted that the belief that man was created materially has persisted in spite of what is said about creation in the first chapter of Genesis. There it is clearly implied that the real creation is entirely spiritual. In the twenty-seventh verse the words occur, "God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him." And although this revelation of the true nature of man exists side by side with the record of the false material concept of creation, the discrepancy between them was not considered seriously until the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, brought the absolute spiritual truth of being to bear upon the subject.
It can be said that a new era began with the discovery of Christian Science. Our Leader recognized God as the great I AM, even as the prophets and Christ Jesus had done. She beheld Him as infinite Spirit or Mind. And understanding Him as Spirit or Mind, she perceived that His creation must consist of ideas. Thus she revealed the truth that since God is infinite Spirit, and everlasting, His creation consists of immortal spiritual ideas.
