Over twenty years ago, I made investigations to find out what the Christian Science textbook and the Bible used by Christian Scientists were. I found their Bible to be the one I had been using, namely, the King James Version, and that it was held in highest esteem by the Founder and Leader of the Christian Science movement, Mary Baker Eddy, the author of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." I found that the book had the following words on page 496: "Hold perpetually this thought,—that it is the spiritual idea, the Holy Ghost and Christ, which enables you to demonstrate, with scientific certainty, the rule of healing, based upon its divine Principle, Love, underlying, overlying, and encompassing all true being." This assured me and gave me confidence that the teaching of Christian Science was in accord with that of Jesus. The perusal of the two books was continued, and to my great surprise within four weeks I had no more need of the eyeglasses I had been using for twelve years, and a throat trouble, which had aroused much concern and was none the better after I had been in the South for almost a year, had disappeared.
Joyous over the unlooked-for good results, as I had merely desired to acquaint myself with the Christian Science teachings, I sent the glad tidings to members of my family, only to be admonished by telegram and letters "not to be entangled with unchristian religion." Following this a case of blood poisoning presented itself in my right foot. Now whether to call a surgeon or resort to help in Christian Science was the question, as the condition had become quite alarming, even the eyeballs being discolored. The decision was made, and a Christian Science practitioner was asked to take the case. Meanwhile, although in excruciating pain, I kept on reading the Bible and the textbook, and the third evening a mental and spiritual operation was experienced, and in a few days freedom was regained. One can but feebly describe the joy it brings "to exchange the pleasures and pains of sense for the joys of Soul" (ibid., p. 390).
This testimony is sent with much gratitude to the King of kings, and inexpressible appreciation of our beloved Leader for her patience and labor, through which we can prove that the blessings mentioned in the Bible are a present possibility.— Winnetka, Illinois.
