SPIRITUAL EXISTENCE

From the December 1931 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science is to-day engaged in the great work of teaching mankind the truth that spiritual existence alone is real. In doing this it is opposed by the physical senses, which testify to the reality of matter. But in spite of all the arguments that human reason, unsupported by divine Science, may put forward in support of the evidence of these so-called senses, Christian Science persists in denying reality to matter in its every form, and to all material phenomena. The position of Christian Science is clearly set forth by Mrs. Eddy on page 492 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," where she says: "For right reasoning there should be butone fact before the thought, namely, spiritual existence. In reality there is no other existence, since Life cannot be united to its unlikeness, mortality."

What is the basis of the position which Christian Science so uncompromisingly takes up? This Science takes for granted that God is infinite Mind or Spirit and concludes that, Spirit being infinite, His creation must be entirely spiritual. This accords with the first chapter of Genesis, wherein is set forth the true or spiritual sense of creation. In this chapter these words occur: "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth;" "God created man in his own image;"and,"God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good."

The Christian Scientist, then, is assured that the real creation is spiritual; that it consists of spiritual ideas, not material objects; and that man, the highest idea of God, is the image of God. And what comfort this assurance brings with it! The material senses still may urge their false claims upon him; he still may have to contend with evil in some form or other, perhaps as sin or disease; but the facts of Spirit's allness and of matter's nothingness remain with him, and in courageous humility he can deny whatever is not good, rejoicing in the truth.
