Organization is as old as human society. That organization is a present necessity, no one can rationally deny. But as to form and use, there are wide divergences. The vast Roman Empire, as a classic example, which in its heyday was popularly supposed to be imperishable, was flourishing during the earthly life of Jesus. Foretelling the destruction of the temple, Jesus said, "As for these things which ye behold, the days will come, in the which there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down." But he did not leave his followers comfortless. He told them his word would not pass away. He told them to work together in his Father's name, to carry on his work by healing all manner of sickness and sin, in the spirit of his immortal command, "Love one another; as I have loved you." The Master's command was, in effect, that we coördinante all our loving activities in advancing the Cause of Christ on earth.
The present and ultimate purpose and aim of church organization is resurrection and ascension of consciousness. Organization, having for its supreme objective the practice of loving as our Master loved, and holding the divine ideal steadily in thought, has God's protection; and these works shall not pass away.
Christian Science equips us with spiritual power so that we may demonstrate the Scriptural admonition to love one another as Jesus loved us. To a Christian world, accustomed to accept somewhat theoretically this beneficent requirement, this new commandment, Christian Science comes, not to modify the requirement, but rather to show the scientific way by which it may be fulfilled in practice. "When the divine precepts are understood," Mrs. Eddy tells us in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 276), "they unfold the foundation of fellowship, in which one mind is not at war with another, but all have one Spirit, God, one intelligent source, in accordance with the Scriptural command: 'Let this Mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus." It is the religious distinction of this age that Christian Science is teaching mankind what these divine precepts are and how we all may understand them, as constituting the indispensable approach to universal brotherhood.
