Testimonies of Healing

Christian Science came into my...

From the February 1931 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science came into my life many years ago, when I was greatly in need of comfort and health. Since that time I have witnessed many proofs of God's care for His children. Before I found Christian Science, like many Christians I was in the habit of asking God to grant me the things which I desired, and often wondered why my prayers were not answered. Through the revelation of Christian Science I learned to pray "aright" and not "amiss."

Because of long illness I was seeking light and help; so, when Christian Science was presented to me, I had no difficulty in accepting it. I was young and, in spite of unhappiness and suffering, I wanted to live. With grateful heart and open mind I welcomed this angel of His presence, and was healed. The unspeakable joy of this first touch of Truth has remained with me throughout many years; and words fail to express my gratitude for this new birth. To-day I know that God is Life, and that He is infinite good.

Some years ago a small bone in my foot was broken. This took place a few days before I left home to visit friends in a distant city. While there was much pain during the ten days I was there, I was able to go about with them. The day after my return home, however, the suffering increased. Worry and nervousness put me into a state of high fever. It was Sunday, and I wanted to go to church, but mortal suggestion hinted that it would be too much of an effort. I opened the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and read the following words (p. 417): "Never tell the sick that they have more courage than strength. Tell them rather, that their strength is in proportion to their courage." I went to the service and enjoyed a restful hour. That afternoon the foot pained again. I then realized that I must be valiant and claim the blessing of healing. Up to that hour I had worked the best I knew how, and past experience had taught me that when we do our best, God does the rest. Opening the Bible to Psalms, I found the following verses: "The righteous cry, and the Lord heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles. The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them all. He keepeth all his bones : not one of them is broken." In the light of these beautiful promises, false argument was brought from under cover, the truth was radically affirmed, and the healing was realized.
