Testimonies of Healing

After my marriage and the birth...

From the September 1931 issue of The Christian Science Journal

After my marriage and the birth of our first child, what little health I had held to gave way. I was an invalid the greater part of ten years; and during the last five I was confined to my bed most of the time, having to take heart stimulants every day and sometimes as often as every fifteen minutes.

I had many physicians and various treatments. The physicians were faithful and considerate, but I received no permanent benefit. My troubles were diagnosed as nervous prostration with its train of ills, heart trouble, indigestion, an internal injury, and misplacement caused by the birth. At last I realized that there would have to be a change in my thinking before I could get well, and I made a remark to this effect to a member of my family. Somehow I felt that God would have to heal me if I was to be healed. When a child, I often went off alone to pray when fearful of some disease or of death; and I was helped, although it was a blind faith. So when a relative who had been helped by Christian Science came to see me, and asked me why I did not try this healing religion, I was ready to listen. First I asked, "Just what is Christian Science?" She wisely answered, "Pure religion." That appealed to me, and I said, "That is just what I want;" for, although I had been brought up in and had united with an orthodox church early in life, I had finally become dissatisfied, for I felt that someone should be approaching the "greater works" that Jesus said we should do if we were truly his followers.

Then the good Samaritan spoke of practitioners, who did healing work. Having secured the name and address of a consecrated Christian Scientist in a near-by town, I wrote to her. She very lovingly answered, and also mailed me a copy of the Christian Science Sentinel. After reading this Sentinel I knew that I had found something which I had been searching for all my life. I knew that I had found the truth, and somehow I felt that all other problems would be solved.
