ONE STEP BEYOND

From the September 1931 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science never demands of anyone more than he is able to practice. However overwhelming may seem the evidence before the material senses, there is a way out, even though to one's limited view this may appear impossible. A Christian Scientist was once heard to say that when faced with a problem he always endeavored to go one step beyond what seemed the limit of his ability. In taking this step, trusting Love to encircle him, he found that his faith in the unseen yet ever present reality bridged over that which had appeared to be the perilous passage to a higher spiritual understanding and wider demonstration of Christian Science.

Why rest satisfied with belief in restricted ability? God-given powers and resources, acknowledged in theory, only too often remain untested. Now is the time to go forward and explore the vast realm of man's capabilities and capacity. What if fears and doubts pursue? One certainly cannot afford to stop and parley with their array of suggested possibilities, but should here and now refuse to give them audience, for they were never included in the divine record of creation. He who goes fearlessly forward finds that limitations and restrictions give place to the conviction and the gradual proof that he is spiritually capable of accomplishing the full scale, for God's reflection can know no boundary line or limit to spiritual possibilities. Paul said, "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me."

A student was obliged at one time to take a rest from duties owing to a physical problem which had claimed her attention. In the home of Christian Scientists she set to work to destroy the discordant condition with the understanding of the truth of being. Although much benefit was felt, the trouble did not wholly yield. Suddenly a call came to go home for the purpose of taking care of a member of her family who was ill. At first the fear suggested itself that she was not yet ready to go back to the duties awaiting her; and thus fear blotted out the clear call of God. A second message, however, decided the question for her, and she obeyed, with the result that in taking this one step beyond what the material evidence declared possible or wise, her healing came.
