GOD'S WITNESSES

From the September 1931 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science gives to one a purpose in life, a direction to one's efforts, a sure Principle whereby one can win true success and happiness. Some people view success as the procuring of money; some, as the acquiring of honor or of human knowledge; while some live solely to get health in order to prolong life. But as soon as Christian Science enters one's thought, a new direction is given one's efforts. One realizes that Jesus came to show us the way of eternal life, to prove the ever-presence of God; and both his life and his works bore witness to the presence of God which he proclaimed in his teaching.

As Christian Scientists, then, we find a purpose in life which is attainable through our new understanding of God. That purpose is to prove each day, to the satisfaction of our reason, that God is really present. In other words, we are to bear witness to the truth.

Jesus said: "For the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me. And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me." Thus Jesus did not minimize the importance of his works; in fact, he frequently pointed to them as the proof or witness of his divine sonship. We are likewise to be witnesses to the presence of God. Every time we are healed of a sickness or a sin, every time through purification of thought as taught in Christian Science we prove the presence of prosperity instead of poverty, we are proving God's presence.
