"DISEASES NOT TO BE CLASSIFIED"

From the September 1931 issue of The Christian Science Journal

On page 176 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," under the marginal heading "Diseases not to be classified," Mrs. Eddy writes, "One disease is no more real than another." What comfort is contained in these words! It is like saying that one disease is no more to be feared than another, and that one disease is no less curable than another. Such statements as these bring hope, perhaps long deferred, to weary seekers after health and peace. They lift a ban placed on mankind by centuries of false teaching, and promise a freedom hitherto undreamed of.

The words "incurable disease" hold much of terror for humanity. But now comes a revelation of Truth that strips them of their erstwhile seeming power to terroize, since Christian Science can heal the most extreme cases of so-called incurability, thus proving that "one disease is no more real than another." In medical practice the term "incurable" means only that disease is so classified because no material remedy has been found to destroy it. Thus the classification concerns healing by material means alone; and even this mode of healing is constantly revising its classification of diseases as curable or incurable. What to-day medical science considers hopeless, to-morrow it may become hopeful of through its own changed outlook. New so-called remedies heralded to suffering humanity seem to relieve fear and in a degree restore harmony for the time being. The belief then prevails that the material remedy has brought relief, whereas the truth is that the fear of the disease has been lessened by faith in the remedy and the whole experience has been a mental one.

In Christian Science we learn why there are no "incurable" diseases. We regard such a classification as we would any other misstatement of spiritual fact, and correct it with the true spiritual facts of being.
