Christian Science was brought to my attention in 1912. After reading a borrowed copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy for about a month I was convinced that Christian Science was the only religion to which I could subscribe completely. Immediately I bought a copy of this textbook for myself, although at that time I was not thinking of Christian Science as a healing agency. However, right away I commenced to receive healings; and although I could not possibly enumerate all of them I should like to name a few.
One of the first healings was of the result of a fall. I was taken home in an unconscious condition; but my daughter, at that time very young, got in touch with a Christian Science practitioner who went right to work, although she was unable to come to me until some hours later. A physician who was called in said it was either a fractured skull or concussion of the brain; that in either case I was in too serious a condition even to be examined, but that if I became conscious he would take me to a hospital and perform an exploratory examination. For some time I kept saying, "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee." I was unconscious from Thursday afternoon until Monday, when I came to myself and asked for something to eat. I ordered food by telephone, much to the surprise of my husband, as I had still been unconscious when he had left home in the morning. I got up and dressed myself, cooked the dinner, and from then on continued taking care of my home and two children. There were no material means used, and no pain, soreness, or convalescent period. However, I had to overcome a sense of fear and mental darkness, which was accomplished in a few months.
I have also been healed of frequent sick headaches, and of hernia which had annoyed me from the time I was a baby, but which was healed in one treatment in Christian Science, although I had tried numerous material remedies without permanent result. There have been many other healings in our family for which I am most grateful; but more than all I am grateful for the growing understanding of the omnipotence and omnipresence of good, because I know it is from God, who is unchangeable, infinite Love, who governs all, and whose word teaches us not to accept untoward conditions as real or fixed, but teaches that they are unreal and can be destroyed by the right application of God's law.
