Christian Science, as revealed to us by Mary Baker Eddy, has so changed my whole viewpoint and my way of thinking, and thereby brought such joy, health, peace, and happiness into my life, that I must try to express some of the gratitude which I feel so deeply.
My husband, before we were married, had had a wonderful healing of ivy poisoning through the help of a practitioner, but had not taken up the study of Christian Science. However, the seed was planted, and soon after our marriage he began talking about the great good Christian Science was doing and of its wonderful healing power. I listened politely, but condescendingly, feeling quite superior and much too intelligent to become interested in what I believed Christian Science to be. My mother, who came to live with us, had suffered some twenty years with serious heart trouble, having had treatments from the best specialists all over the country without being benefited. Through the influence of my husband she asked help of a Christian Science practitioner, and was completely healed in one treatment. This impressed me somewhat, but I was still skeptical. My husband asked me to read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and I consented, read a little of it, thought it very beautiful, but did not understand its import or its glorious truth.
Soon after this my husband had a nervous breakdown, and I became greatly distressed, especially over his mental condition when, one evening, he locked himself in a room refusing to eat or to see anyone. My mother asked if I would permit her to call a practitioner to help me and I consented. About half an hour after she had telephoned for help, while I was still crying with fear, my husband came out to me and cheerfully said he felt fine and would like something to eat and a copy of Science and Health to read. I was so filled with awe and gratitude for the marvelous change in his condition that the light dawned on me then and there that this was a marvelous, demonstrable Science, and it was imperative for me to study earnestly and strive to understand its teachings. I obtained a Christian Science Quarterly and started reading the Bible Lessons daily, understanding very little at first, but getting enough to know that Christian Science revealed the truth. The greatest joy I had ever known came when the passages in Science and Health which seemed so vague at first began to unfold, and the Bible, which had always seemed contradictory and abstruse, began to be a wonderful book of promise.
