CHRISTIAN SCIENCE: THE LAW OF GOD

From the March 1933 issue of The Christian Science Journal

MARY BAKER EDDY, whose spiritual vision was clear enough to discover the truth of being, has defined Christian Science, her discovery, as "the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony" (Rudimental Divine Science, p. 1) . What a portentous statement this is! Only a deep and consecrated study can reveal a degree of its boundless meaning. This prayerful contemplation will erase from thought any concept of Christian Science as a human system, as merely another denomination or higher development of religious thought. Christian Science is the complete and final revelation of God's law; it is that spiritual law which operates to heal sin, sorrow, sickness, poverty, and death. Christian Science came to a waiting world through the inspired thought of Mrs. Eddy; and through her great love, self-sacrifice, and obedience to divine Love she made known to mankind the remedy for all its woes.

Law, in a general meaning, is an unalterable rule of action, established by a power capable of enforcing it. God's law, in its loving-kindness surpassing the highest human standards of justice, condemns sin, not persons, and is the divine energy applicable to our every need, whether mental, moral, physical, or financial. The fundamental rules of natural science, so called, when put into practice, bring about more or less certain results. The divine rules of true being, put into practice in human affairs, bring about its good results with far greater certainty and satisfaction. In solving a problem, each may always rejoice that the solution is even now existent in Mind; that in his own blessing others will be blessed; that in his demonstration of the nothingness of evil, whatever its form, the sum of worldliness will be lessened, thereby revealing more of God's universe and man in their beautiful reality, and giving evidence that "whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever." Is not this fullness of satisfaction?

To those accustomed to the disappointments of material methods, the working of God's law is so joyous that its manifestations are often called miracles. But so-called miracles are not infractions of God's law, for the completeness of His wisdom enables Him to govern His creation consistently. Christian Scientists, in the exact proportion of their understanding and consecration, are showing the law of God to be constantly available in proving good as normal in all that pertains to well-being, happiness, and prosperity. With the first step in the understanding of Truth the beginner in Christian Science may apply his knowledge and see its effect.
