EVER PRESENT SUPPLY

From the January 1934 issue of The Christian Science Journal

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE presents to mankind an absolute and positive remedy for the unhappy conditions of unemployment and lack. Such problems as these are not new: they have seemed to exist in the mortal or carnal mind since the beginning of the belief in a power other than God. Jesus had to deal with them. In the midst of perplexing conditions essentially similar to those of today Christ Jesus demonstrated among his fellow men the kingdom of God on earth. He not only healed the sick and the sinning, but he also demonstrated God's ever present power to meet the human need of whatever nature. Having at hand only a few loaves and fishes, he fed the multitude. So complete was the Master's work in meeting the need of the multitude that none were left wanting, and after all had eaten, several basketfuls of fragments were gathered up. Such a demonstration is no miracle or mystery to those who understand God. The same healing power manifested by Jesus is available today to all mankind; and he said that we should do even "greater works" than he did.

A dictionary definition of "supply" is "sufficiency." One who does not understand God to be the infinite source of all good might doubt the sufficiency of God to meet every human need. Seeming lack of material supply is often the manifestation of the lack of spiritual understanding taking form in anxiety. It may be the result of selfishness, disobedience, resentment, or the lack of sincerity. A close analysis may disclose some degree of dishonesty. In any event, one's real need is an understanding of God, of Truth, Life, and Love. Then comes the question, "How can I progress most rapidly in the understanding of Christian Science?" as found on page 495 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," in answer to which our Leader says: "Study thoroughly the letter and imbibe the spirit. Adhere to the divine Principle of Christian Science and follow the behests of God, abiding steadfastly in wisdom, Truth, and Love."

When a student of Christian Science was left without employment or funds for some time it seemed impossible for him to meet the financial demands made upon him. This student earnestly desired a better understanding of the truth so that he might know and do good. He had learned that as one reflects God, good, human needs are always met. He had a sincere and unselfish desire to be righteously employed, to have plenty, and to be prosperous. These words of Jesus came to his thought as the voice of divine Mind: "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." Following this admonition of divine Mind, the student retired daily to a quiet place, and there with the Bible, the writings of Mary Baker Eddy, and other authorized Christian Science literature, earnestly sought a better understanding of Christian Science and strove to see the truth pertaining to his particular situation. In a very short time, through faithful thinking and earnest study, together with the help of a Christian Science practitioner, the student's consciousness was made purer, and the light began to appear. In this studying he had been working in a truly paying position. He had been making use of his talents, thinking good thoughts and excluding bad ones. Then an offer of employment came from persons who were altogether unfamiliar with his condition, the contact having been brought about through a mutual friend.
