TRUTH VERSUS TIME

From the January 1934 issue of The Christian Science Journal

AS one becomes better acquainted with the teachings of Christian Science, many preconceived notions about time give way to a better understanding of Truth. Spiritual measurements begin to take the place of time measurements. As long as men and women entertain beliefs about growing old, or as long as they persist in measuring their capacity and usefulness in terms of years, a clearer comprehension of the truth about such things will continue to be a requisite of Christian teaching.

Note the expanse of human interests covered by the definition of "time" given by Mrs. Eddy (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 595): "Mortal measurements; limits, in which are summed up all human acts, thoughts, beliefs, opinions, knowledge; matter; error; that which begins before, and continues after, what is termed death, until the mortal disappears and spiritual perfection appears." In the foregoing definition it is made plain that all manner of limitations are measurements, which birth and death do not control, but which are included in general mortal belief, and that when "spiritual perfection appears," what is called time and all its inclusions will cease.

Christian Science is the truth which interprets God, man, and the universe scientifically. Authority for considering Christianity and Science conjointly is found in the life and teachings of the Master. Of this conjoint relationship our Leader has written (ibid., p. 342): "If Christianity is not scientific, and Science is not of God, then there is no invariable law, and truth becomes an accident." Through such works as healing sickness and sin, walking on the water, and multiplying the loaves and fishes, Christ Jesus proved himself to be the master Christian and the master Scientist. Christians are willing to accept the teachings of the Master from a religious viewpoint, but many are reluctant to look to his teachings for the truths about Science.
