A STUDENT of Christian Science, disturbed over finances, was struggling with suggestions of lack, limitation, despair, which threatened to darken her consciousness and deafen it to the voice of Truth. Some such struggle David may have experienced when he cried for help because, as he said, "false witnesses are risen up against me, and such as breathe out cruelty."
The student opened the Bible at the first chapter of Genesis, determined to recognize as real only the creation mentioned therein. Reading through this chapter and the first two verses of the second chapter, she was struck by the grand statements elucidating creation. She read, "God said"; then came the statement that He made or created what He had purposed; that He saw His work as "very good"; and, finally, that He rested. Pondering these statements, she was led to turn to the wonderful interpretation of the city that "lieth foursquare," as found on pages 575— 577 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. On page 575 she read: "The four sides of our city are the Word, Christ, Christianity, and divine Science; 'and the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.' This city is wholly spiritual, as its four sides indicate."
The divine consciousness, or eternal city of God, always appearing to each of us as we are ready to perceive it, has, then, four equally wonderful and important sides or points of vantage. They may be regarded as God's Word, or His holy purpose; the Christ, making manifest that divine purpose; Christianity, the practice developed from the vision entertained by Christ Jesus and left to us as a priceless legacy; and Christian Science, the full and final revelation of Truth, in which we can rest secure.
