Testimonies of Healing

I always loved goodness and purity...

From the January 1934 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I always loved goodness and purity and joined an orthodox church at the age of thirteen; but as my observation increased and my thinking grew analytical I more or less discarded belief in religion as I had found it, and came to believe that ethics was the only reasonable ideal. At that time, fifteen years ago, our eldest son, then a baby of ten months, was given up by the doctors. Throughout these months there had been a struggle with a heart-rending difficulty, malnutrition. At times this took the acute form of intestinal gastritis, when the little fellow suffered greatly, often going into convulsions. At the age of ten months he had the development of only a three-months-old child. Finally, in the depths of despair, and with no knowledge of or belief in Christian Science, I was persuaded to read the textbook and to call a practitioner for help for the baby. He immediately recovered, could eat any reasonable food, and began to try to walk. He never had another attack.

Since then I have seen many healings in Science, but none more complete or convincing. I can still recall the sense of clearness and relief which indicated my own healing of fear, responsibility, and grief. I am happy to say that never since that time have I been in doubt that Christian Science is the final and perfect expression of religion. I have often failed to live up to the light, and there was one long period of apparent backsliding, but I have always recognized and acknowledged that God's revelation to our Leader is the truth.

I do not know how I could rear my large family without Christian Science. There are now six children and one grandchild, but for over ten years they have had no help in physical or mental trials except Science. We have had many instantaneous healings and some that took longer to realize, but in every case that I recall, including three experiences of childbirth and a recovery from smallpox, there has been no period of convalescence. We have experienced healings that proved to us that Christian Science comforts in sorrow and reconciles where a sense of injustice prevails. It is also teaching me that Love gives us continual employment, and that charity means to see our fellow man as God really made him. I love Christian Science and am proud to be numbered among those who are trying to measure up to its standards.—
