MOST of those who are as yet unenlightened by Christian Science believe that matter creates and controls its own conditions, and this causes them to repose faith in the supposed power of matter to correct or heal disease and discord. A large proportion of those who are now Christian Scientists relinquished their faith in medical methods only when these failed them, and they then turned for healing to God and His law, Christian Science. A great liberation from fear of sickness and beliefs in heredity followed the transfer of their trust from nonintelligent, inert matter to God, infinite Mind. Christian Science has blessed mankind immeasurably by exposing the total inability of matter, and by revealing the infinite ability of God, divine Love, for thereby men are enabled to trust fully in the power of God not only to heal them but to protect them from all ills.
Certainly this accords with the teaching and example of Christ Jesus, whose trust in God was unwavering and unbounded under all circumstances. Palsy and fever, dropsy and epilepsy—in fact, all manner of disease—were healed by the Master. An eyewitness stated that when two blind men appealed to Christ Jesus for healing he said to them, "According to your faith be it unto you." And, their faith in God being greater than their belief in matter, they were healed. His understanding of and trust in the affluence of divine Love enabled Jesus to feed the multitudes in a seemingly miraculous manner. His trust in and consciousness of Life as infinite and eternal reversed the human belief in death for Lazarus and others, and later for himself.
Today the healing power and presence of the Christ, Truth, are being realized through Christian Science; and a constantly increasing number are experiencing the joyous privilege of trusting in God alone for their healing and protection. Because at first Christian Science may be known to men principally on account of its healing efficacy, there may arise the belief that it emphasizes trust in God mainly in connection with the healing of sickness. But soon after beginning the study of this Science the student learns that healing physical disease is indeed the smallest part of its ministry. He finds, perhaps as a phase of his own first healing, that the overcoming of sin is the main purpose of Christian Science. This includes the displacing of human will with trust in the divine will; the supplanting of personal domination by the welcomed dominion of divine Principle, Love; it means, in fact, trusting God fully in connection with every problem and situation that may arise with the individual and family, in business and in church, in the community and the nation.
