In 1916, during the war, I was wounded in the head by a bullet, which caused me considerable suffering. I turned to many doctors for help, but received only temporary relief. Finally I went to a specialist in London, feeling sure that he would be able to help me, but to my despair he told me that I was past medical aid. He said that the only thing I could do was to see a "suggester," but feeling despondent I gave up all hope in doctors' opinions.
In 1919 I returned to Malaya to resume rubber planting. Shortly after starting to work I had a nervous breakdown, and was told by a doctor that he considered the climate in the East unsuitable for me and that I must return to England.
My estate manager, who was a Christian Scientist, asked me if I should like to try Christian Science, as he knew that it would heal me. To this I replied that I was willing to try it, as I did not want to return to England and be in the hands of doctors, who, I felt, could not help me. I then began to read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, at the same time receiving absent treatment from a Christian Science practitioner. At once I began to feel better and threw out all my medicines.
