LOYALTY TO GOD

From the October 1935 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The understanding of God is the remedy for every error under the sun. God and His manifestation is all that exists. Therefore every accusation or lowering suggestion of material sense is a libel against God, and the only way to nullify its pernicious influence is to gain a clearer sense of God. Mrs. Eddy writes (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 517), "Love imparts the clearest idea of Deity." In this idea there is no vulnerable element.

Every specific temptation, therefore, is part of the general temptation to ignore or question the omnipresent and omnipotent perfection of God, divine Principle, and our oneness with that omnipotence and omnipresence. Trueness to God brings deliverance from the belief in an evil presence or power. Wholehearted worship of Spirit absolves us from bowing down to matter through fear or false attraction, for neither of these errors has any place in God, in man, or in the universe. Besides God and His infinite manifestation there is nothing real.

Obviously, then, the effort of error is to becloud our sense of Deity and of ourselves as His manifestation. When we are beset with some apparently deceiving argument, our first resolve should be to renew our vow of allegiance to God, the Father-Mother of all, and this righteous and vital resolve is victorious for the reason that it is divinely inspired and permeated with the spirit of obedience and loyalty. Should the argument be one of mental darkness, lack of inspiration, the deadness of the letter, the absence of spiritual sense, what then? The remedy lies in our loyal worship of the only Mind and our sincere conviction of the glorious light in which man is invariably bathed. But, error argues, that is true of God's image, but not of you. Here is an attempt to deceive us into believing that an ignorant, sinful mortal actually exists outside of God, who is All-in-all.
