STUDY AND WORK

From the October 1935 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In no particular, perhaps, did our Leader manifest greater wisdom than in her ordination of the Bible and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" as "our only preachers" (Christian Science Quarterly, Explanatory Note, p. ii), and in her provision for the Lesson-Sermons to be read in our churches.

In Section 1 of Article III of the Church Manual, we find the following requirement: "The Readers of The Mother Church and of all its branch churches must devote a suitable portion of their time to preparation for the reading of the Sunday lesson,—a lesson on which the prosperity of Christian Science largely depends." Generally speaking, the church Readers will be found complying conscientiously with this requirement. However, the members of the churches, even class-taught students, may not always be as conscientious and thorough in their preparation to listen profitably to the reading of these Lesson-Sermons.

What one takes away with him from any Christian Science meeting, lecture, or church service depends very largely on what one brings to it. So if we are bringing into our church services "all the tithes" of spiritual preparation, humility, alertness, and receptivity, we shall take from these services an abundance of peace, joy, inspiration, understanding, and a greater measure of ability to demonstrate Christian Science in our daily living.
