"REASONING FROM CAUSE TO EFFECT"

From the December 1935 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Twice each year the Christian Science Quarterly contains a Lesson entitled "God the Only Cause and Creator." Therein is always clearly set forth the eternal verity that God, good, being the only cause, evil is neither a cause nor an effect.

The question arises, To what extent are Christian Scientists allowing this truth to take possession of their thinking in a practical way? Is it not a noticeable fact that whenever some untoward condition appears, such as disease or disorder of any kind, thought almost immediately endeavors to establish a reason or cause for it, either mental or physical? The progressive student of Christian Science is learning to correct this tendency with the clear realization that divine Mind is the only source of action or being, and that, therefore, any inharmonious condition is entirely without cause, foundation, or starting point, and must consequently be unreal—wholly fictitious. If he is decisive enough in this conclusion, and his conviction of the fact outweighs the seeming evidence of error, his realization is indeed demonstration, and the discordant condition will yield at once to the manifestation of harmony.

On page 415 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, we find the statement, "Immortal Mind is the only cause; therefore disease is neither a cause nor an effect." And further (p. 467) she says. "Reasoning from cause to effect in the Science of Mind, we begin with Mind, which must be understood through the idea which expresses it and cannot be learned from its opposite, matter." The Christian Scientist knows that in order to arrive at the correct solution of any problem he must adopt this logical reasoning, and cease to accept as real the false evidence of the material senses. Then why not begin at once to reason from this true standpoint instead of wandering around in the mazes of material, mortal belief to find a cause that must in the end be recognized as baseless, untrue? In other words, why not immediately claim our absolute unity with the one Mind, God, look out from Mind instead of from deceiving personal sense testimony, and thus rise superior to the seeming evil appearance and whatever may claim to have produced it?
