OVERCOMING THE WORLD

From the December 1935 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Because of distressful occurrences which seemed rampant in the world about them, Jesus once spoke to his disciples these comforting words: "In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world."

He did not deny the appearance of difficulties and disappointments, but the implication was that since he had overcome evil conditions sufficiently to rise above them, so could they. The same power and guidance that he claimed and recognized as ever present were theirs also. The Father had not left any of them alone, to work things out along the lines of mere personal responsibility. The Master could speak with undoubting confidence as to God's availability, because he was able to say of himself, "I do always those things that please him."

This, then, is the pattern set before all those who earnestly desire to be clearly conscious of their oneness with God, and this is a daily question: Am I doing constantly those things which please God? In any event He will not leave us or forsake us, for the all-seeing eye of God beholds His perfect creation, including perfect man. But through disobedience to the highest good we know, or apathetic indifference, we, in belief, shut ourselves out of the kingdom and grope about in the darkness of nothingness, perhaps until satiated with materiality. Then, wearied of the false gods, we become finally ready to turn to the light, which has been steadily shining all the time, even though "the darkness comprehended it not." In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy writes (p. 444), "Step by step will those who trust Him find that 'God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.'"
