Poems

THE PRODIGAL

From the December 1935 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I will arise and go unto my Father,
Far I have wandered willfully astray;
Pursuing madly vain and selfish pleasure,
Snatching at fancied joys along the way.

All that He gave me I have vainly squandered,
Forgetting quite to whom I owed my all,
Giving no thought to home and loving Father,
Reckless, responding to each earthly call.

Now I have found the husks are empty, hollow,
Pleasures have failed, unfaithful friends are fled;
I long for safety, comfort, consolation,
Shelter to hide my shamed and drooping head.

I will arise and go unto my Father,
Humble, sincere, repentant of my sin;
He will tenderly to His heart enfold me,
As through His ever-open door I enter in.
