Testimonies of Healing

Breaking the chains which a man...

From the January 1936 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Breaking the chains which a man imposes upon himself through mortal beliefs gives us cause for rejoicing in our knowledge of the true bonds of Love, as revealed to us through Christian Science. I have known something of this Science all of my life, but have not always adhered as closely to the study and practice of its teachings as I might have done. Throughout my childhood, when physical help seemed necessary, the problem was always solved by a practitioner, with little effort on my part. This was not true, however, in cases of seeming inharmony and mental unrest, for here my slight knowledge of Christian Science enabled me many times to realize that only harmony can exist in God's home, and this harmony is invariably manifested. I am sincerely grateful for the Christian Science Sunday School, which is teaching young people to know and trust God and to utilize this knowledge in their daily experiences.

I have had many physical healings in Christian Science, including those of so-called children's diseases, influenza, leakage of the heart, goiter, dislocated and broken bones, and a severe laceration of the knee.

Over two years ago a difficulty of the heart and lungs manifested itself, and in a very short period of time I lost about sixty pounds. A doctor, whom I allowed to examine me to satisfy relatives, assured me that I must spend at least a year in bed, and that I could not possibly consider working at all that winter or for some time to come. I realized that the time had come when I must learn to face a problem myself and not expect someone else to do all the work. A practitioner took me into her home and guided and helped me to a fuller understanding of God. A little more than a month after the physician had pronounced his verdict, I resumed my work as a teacher, and was able to carry on while the complete healing was being manifested. I was lovingly guided and protected throughout this entire experience. I am sincerely grateful for the physical healing, but I am much more grateful for the growth in understanding which this experience afforded, since trials become blessings when, through meeting them, we reach a clearer vision of God and of man as His perfect likeness.
