The healing efficacy of Christian Science and the protection afforded its adherents are to me cause for much gratitude.
In her Message to The Mother Church for 1902 (p. 19) our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, says, "A danger besets thy path?—a spiritual behest, in reversion, awaits you." The truth of this was clearly proved one night when I was approached by a hold-up man while I was putting up my car. He took my purse, and when I calmly refused to do his bidding and get into the car, he shot at me twice but failed to hit me. He then struck me with his revolver in an attempt to overpower me, but through divine protection I was unharmed except for a bruise on my cheek, which disappeared in a few days. All through this experience I declared God's presence and power, and for the most part I remained unafraid.
All the next day I worked mentally on the operation of justice and pondered the Bible verse from Isaiah, "Behold, the Lord's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear." That evening the man was captured, my purse was returned to me, and other people regained some of their possessions which he had taken.
