LOVE'S CALL TO ARMS

From the August 1936 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Love is infinite, all-knowing, and omnipotent, for Love is God. We learn in Christian Science that divine Love includes all that is lovely, all that is good, and nothing else. Love is therefore opposed to that only which is unlovely, that which is not good, that which is called evil. Love being infinite, nothing unlovely really exists; there is in actual fact no evil. But the false claims of mortal sense, mentally entertained and unresisted, may often seem very real, and perhaps very distressing. Through the Christ, Truth, divine Love is revealed as ever available, and as the one and only antidote for all forms of suppositional evil, including distressing world conditions, economic unrest, war, disease, sin, poverty, crime—all that is not good. Such conditions as these are every day challenging thinkers to find a remedy.

The everyday objective of the alert Christian Scientist is to demonstrate true being, and so eradicate erroneous mortal beliefs. Only as the fabulous suggestions of sin, discord, and disease are exposed to the light of Truth and dissolved, can we reach a true and lasting sense of peace, health, and happiness. Through the power and guidance of divine Love this attainment is a present possibility. Since evil, or error, is but the seeming absence of Truth, has not Truth the power to destroy the sense of evil— that which is unlike God, good? The progressive Christian Scientist is never static; he never stands still. He is actively engaged in warfare against erroneous evil beliefs. Led by divine Love he utilizes the power of Truth to destroy error, for "the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword." On page 450 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" our Leader has said, "The Christian Scientist has enlisted to lessen evil, disease, and death; and he will overcome them by understanding their nothingness and the allness of God, or good." Chaotic human experiences at home and abroad impress us with the growing need for genuine Christianly scientific engagement against all that is opposed to Life, Truth, and Love.

All may enlist in the service of Love. None are ineligible. Enlisting to lessen evil may not always have seemed voluntary; some mortal malady or discord may have forced one to align himself on God's side, the side of right. Others have observed the rich benefits of divine Science and have voluntarily begun to seek Truth. Multitudes are testifying that by so doing they have been liberated, healed, and made strong. They have availed themselves of the truth about God and man as revealed in Christian Science, and error's subtle modes of operation have thus been uncovered. The ability to detect the workings of suppositional evil helps one to destroy its discordant effects.
