She stood alone upon the rock of Truth,
And scanned the pale horizon's distant rim;
The waves of malice, like the ocean deep,
Dashed fierce and high, and flung their warnings grim.
The lightnings flashed; the thunder roared and rolled;
The elements of evil warred on good;
And earthquake, fire, and tempest's breath passed by,
But could not shake the rock on which she stood.
How far away those deep, clear eyes had looked
Beholding what to others was unseen,
The realm of Spirit, pure and wondrous fair,
The infinite unknown, the heavenly scheme.
And as she gazed, the vision nearer came;
Its glory covered earth and sea and sky;
It was the Father's universe of love,
Where goodness, Life, and Truth can never die.
We too must stand upon that living rock,
And where she pointed out must look and see
The city with foundations builded strong,
The place our Saviour promised you and me.
But we must make that glorious vision ours,
Must feel the unseen power, must understand,
Must rise in Spirit's strength to see and know
That infinite, eternal, perfect land.
