MAN: OUR TRUE SELFHOOD

From the December 1938 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The nature of God and man was revealed by Christ Jesus in his uniquely spiritual, practical, and humane ministry among men. In the seventh chapter of John's Gospel it is recorded that the chief priests and Pharisees said to the officers whom they had dispatched to arrest Jesus, "Why have ye not brought him?" and that "the officers answered, Never man spake like this man." True to his divine sonship, Christ Jesus spake not as a mortal. His understanding of God and his ever redemptive love for men led him to say, "Even so it is not the will of your Father which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish."

The purpose of Christian Science is identical with that of primitive Christianity, and this purpose is in process of being achieved the world over, in accord with Scriptural prophecy. In her chief work, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy writes (p. 316), "Christ presents the indestructible man, whom Spirit creates, constitutes, and governs." And in her illuminating answer to the question, "What is man?" (ibid., p. 475) she boldly states what spiritual man is not, as well as what he is.

If, then, one who seems to be afflicted with many ills and is in dire need of comfort will make a study of this inspired exposition of the true man and adjust his thought-processes accordingly, he will enter upon an era of spiritual enlightenment wherein "old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." To gain spiritual enlightenment is humanity's one great need meeting all other needs. Christian Science is radical and redemptive. It brings freedom to those who cherish it in their hearts and utilize it in shaping their character and safeguarding their purpose in life.
