THE SEVENTH COMMANDMENT

From the June 1938 issue of The Christian Science Journal

On page 56 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy writes, "The commandment, 'Thou shalt not commit adultery,' is no less imperative than the one, 'Thou shalt not kill.'" As defined by Webster's Dictionary, "to adulterate" is to falsify by mixture of baser ingredients; and the kindred word "alloy" is defined as anything that reduces purity.

A lie is the basis of all wrongdoing, even the lie that man, God's image, is both spiritual and material; or, in other words, that he is a mixture of good and evil. This lie is refuted by Christian Science, whose revelation of the truth about man is based on the definition of him given in the first chapter of Genesis. In this chapter it is stated that man is created in the image of God. The lie of a dual-natured man is sustained in human thought by the testimony of the material senses. If we accept their evidence as conclusive, we are forced to admit that so it seems. However, through repeated demonstrations of healing and regeneration, based on the fact of man's wholly spiritual nature, sense testimony in opposition to this truth is being proved false in the practice of Christian Science.

From the lie that man is both spiritual and material has resulted all the sin, disease, and death in human experience. Then, in order to realize the real man's original and present state of purity, we need to repudiate all that argues for his imperfection.
