There is an old saying that "precious goods come in small packages," a truism which the working Christian Scientist who knows his Manual daily verifies. In that little volume, no bigger than a slice of bread, there are to be found in simple phrasing, codes and canons which scientifically disposed of paramount questions and exigencies existing at the time of its issuance, as well as others that arose later. The divinity that guided Mrs. Eddy in shaping her statutes for immediate needs was equally influential in formulating the others. It is reasonable to assume that she foresaw the possibility of what afterwards became a fact, namely, that the legal phase of her demonstration would be tested in the tribunals of human law. It was tested; and its vindication is a matter of record.
During the two years of the writer's daily association with our Leader in her home at Chestnut Hill, it was sometimes a wonder to him that its author gave to the Manual such preeminence. It was not then evident, as it subsequently became to us all, that it was the permanent safeguard of our entire movement, invulnerable against attacks from within and from without.
The branch church whose members hold the Manual as their guide, counselor, and friend, is the one that prospers, is harmonious, and exemplifies the Christian Science concept of Truth and Love. The members who understand it, and apply it faithfully and intelligently, are wiser in their decisions than those who do not, and have fewer snarls to untangle.
