TRUE PURPOSE

From the June 1938 issue of The Christian Science Journal

No one could be expected to face life enthusiastically without a definite feeling that there is some purpose in it, and that this purpose extends to his individual living. A completely purposeless life would be a blank experience: it would not be life at all. We cannot conceive of God, who is Life, as purposeless. And man, who is the expression of God, Life, fulfills God's purpose. When we talk of being about our Father's business, we mean that we are evidencing God's purpose in man.

Our success, then, and our happiness of accomplishment, go back to the fundamental fact that the creator of the universe has a plan in all His government, in all the activity of His creation. An understanding of this will bring meaning to our efforts. It will make apparent the fact that our every right thought and act is expressive of the divine plan. It is, then, possible to proceed happily in our various everyday doings, even though we may not see the reason for each step, or the outcome.

An error that must be guarded against is that which would argue for the futility, monotony, or irksomeness of our daily work. Whether we find employment as clerks or executives; whether our activity consists chiefly of household duties, or moves along professional lines, the argument may arise that our work is meaningless, and does not measure up to our aspirations; that we are of little service to anyone, even to ourselves, and that we are sacrificing ourselves for naught. This sense of inadequacy will disappear as we look for the divine purpose underlying our consecrated day-to-day living.
