Stability and security have been much in world thought during the last few years. Shifting trends and troublous events, with their resultant confusion, have caused many thoughtful observers to ask, What is stability, and where may it be found? Nations also have pondered this question as they have watched the appalling spectacle of social, economic, and industrial changes undermining and even destroying hitherto supposedly impregnable foundations. And they have sought to rebuild national prosperity and greatness upon the unstable foundation of human means, such as armament or territorial and commercial expansion.
That these human modes have contributed little to an enlightened concept of stability cannot be denied. One has only to look about him to see that armament has resulted in more armament, with a proportionate increase of fear and international discord. Cleverly maneuvered commercial advantage has not always resulted in commercial amity. Selfish nationalistic trends have further complicated the cause of international peace. In the face of such devastating mental storms it is small wonder that men's hearts fail and they seek anchorage. The amazing thing is that after repeated failure to find anything enduring in mere human modes and methods, mankind still persists in looking to them for stability and peace.
Ancient prophets were wont to rebuke the materialism of their times and endeavor to turn men's thoughts toward the enduring things of Spirit. Thus we read in the thirty-third chapter of Isaiah, "And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times, and strength of salvation: the fear of the Lord is his treasure."
