St. Paul wrote in his second epistle to the Corinthians, "Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift." I wish to concur with St. Paul's statement in my gratitude for Christian Science, and for the practitioner, and the many healings which have come to me and to my family through the study of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I was a student at a medical college, and during the examinations at the close of my sophomore year, the nerves of my eyes became paralyzed and for a period of ten years I was unable to read.
I had access to the best professional services. Every possible remedy was tried, but without the slightest effect. The doctors were very kind and did everything they could do to help me. As a last resort they recommended that I try an out-of-door life. We then moved to the country, but after two years of this there was no improvement. My hope was gone, and my helplessness indeed seemed a heavy burden.
I had grown dissatisfied with the church of which I was a member, and one evening a young clergyman, who held liberal views and who was a friend of mine, invited me to accompany him to hear a lecture on Christian Science. I accepted the invitation, and during the lecture the definition of God was given as found on page 465 of the Christian Science textbook, "God is incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love." A sense of great spiritual power came to me; and also the assurance that I had found the path which would lead me to an understanding of the true God.
