PROVING CHRISTIAN SCIENCE

From the September 1938 issue of The Christian Science Journal

For nearly three quarters of a century Christian Science has been giving to the world such convincing proof of its authenticity that, generally speaking, it now is being accepted in a more appreciable degree than formerly. Its true acceptance and proof, however, begin with individual demonstration, wherein the evidence accumulates to show that it is based upon the unalterable law of God.

In referring to her own experience, Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, shows how she arrived at her conclusions. On page 108 of her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," she writes, "My conclusions were reached by allowing the evidence of this revelation to multiply with mathematical certainty and the lesser demonstration to prove the greater, as the product of three multiplied by three, equalling nine, proves conclusively that three times three duodecillions must be nine duodecillions,—not a fraction more, not a unit less." Again (ibid., p. 461), she makes the following statement: "Christian Science must be accepted at this period by induction. We admit the whole, because a part is proved and that part illustrates and proves the entire Principle."

Christ Jesus taught men about the kingdom of heaven, illustrating his meaning in parables and allowing the evidence of the truth to multiply in his many healing works. Jesus revealed spiritual law, and as he unfolded it the people marveled because of the "signs," or so-called miracles, which accompanied his teaching. In his first recorded proof of Truth by demonstration, at the marriage feast in Cana of Galilee, in the feeding of the five thousand in a desert place, and in the great draught of fish brought to shore after he had told a few fishermen to "launch out into the deep," Jesus gave undeniable and spontaneous proof of the presence of unlimited supply, and of the infinite divine law underlying supply in the economy of the universe.
